Big Turtle Trekking explores the amazing sites found throughout the Whitley and Laurel County areas of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Our Local Forest
Did you know our forest was once called Cumberland National Forest? The Forest Service had the good sense to rename it to Daniel Boone National Forest in the 1960s. Daniel Boone was given the name Sheltowee, meaning Big Turtle, by the Shawnee tribe. The Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail runs along the length of the forest for 269 miles and even some into TN. The forest is around 2,100,000 acres and covers parts of 21 counties in Eastern Kentucky. That’s huge! With five wildlife management areas and over 600 miles of trails, there’s an endless bounty of beautiful sites to see. Of course my opinion is biased, but I think we have the best parts right here in our little community.
